Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Religious ideologies significantly influence political participation, particularly in societies where religion is deeply embedded in socio-political structures. In Gusau LGA, Zamfara State, faith-based organizations play a pivotal role in mobilizing communities, shaping political discourse, and fostering civic engagement. Religious ideologies provide a moral framework that influences voters’ behavior, policy preferences, and leadership choices (Abdullahi & Suleiman, 2023; Yakubu et al., 2024). In Gusau, the predominance of Islamic teachings has shaped political participation, often aligning governance priorities with religious values. However, while faith-based organizations have enhanced political awareness and participation, they also face criticism for potential bias and exclusion of minority perspectives. This study appraises the impact of religious ideologies, as propagated by faith-based organizations, on political participation in Gusau LGA, exploring both their contributions and challenges.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although religious ideologies have been instrumental in promoting political participation in Gusau LGA, their role often generates debates over inclusivity, neutrality, and effectiveness. Faith-based organizations have successfully mobilized communities for electoral processes and advocacy campaigns (Ibrahim & Danladi, 2024; Musa et al., 2023). However, the dominance of specific religious ideologies raises concerns about marginalization of minority groups and the politicization of religion. Additionally, there is limited scholarly focus on the nuanced relationship between religious ideologies and political participation at the local level. This study seeks to address these gaps by examining the impact of religious ideologies on political participation in Gusau LGA, highlighting the contributions and limitations of faith-based organizations.
